GREGOIRE PUJADE-LAURAINE - THE SIGNIFICANT SAVAGES

The Significant Savages is a book compiling together a collection of profile pictures that don't show the person themselves. I love this idea as it is this one image that the person has chosen to represent them, and must say a lot about the person. Whether it be a dog, location or... body builder, you can take something from that image about the person and it too performs as a self portrait without it being a literal one.

It is in a book format and is split into sections showing a specific type of image for example landscapes or pets and the specific type of images are grouped together further by ordering them in such a way that they are paired with a similar image next to them, whether that be by colour or by specifics.

I really like the idea of this project and I find it really interesting the way it has been laid out. It's also really interesting to think of how it could be changed for a gallery setting as it is unlikely it would be able to be produced in a similar way.

WINONA BARTON-BALLENTINE

DUPLICATES

'I've gathered different elements in my immediate physical environment and created facsimiles of them using varying technical resources and materials. The organic substances in the images are found inside and surrounding my homes and hold some significance for me.

I printed the photographs on a digital duplicator with soy based ink. The process uses four individually colored inks, each layer separated out digitally in the original image file and then printed one at a time. The inks physical composition is experienced through sight, smell, and touch. By reworking their material and visual qualities I'm attempting to get closer to the meaning that they hold for me.'

I found this project really interesting, the idea that the substances were found inside and around her homes and therefore hold a specific significance to her. The idea of the personal being made into imagery like this makes me think about the ideas within my project, how objects and the photographers choices show more about the photographer than first thought.

HOUSEPLANTS

Barton-Ballentine has described this as an ongoing project showing some of her houseplants. Again an insight into her, without actually showing her.

I'm not sure whether any of these have been exhibited but they could do so easily as they are in a very specific series that could be easily formatted.

RYAN HALLIWILL

I am looking into how different photographers portray self portraits without actually showing their face and these self portraits by Ryan Halliwill are another example along the lines of Julie Pochron as food is used within the images. I have also actually included a food question within my series of images in the form of a fridge and food has been used within other images and so I think it is interesting to think about how specific photographers have consciously decided to add food into their images where as within my images, although it is a conscious decision to add food into the images, they wouldn't necessarily be thinking about it as a self portrait of themselves. It's also making me start to think about the relationship between food and people and the different ways that this could be shown and thought about.

From what I know, these images are only online based, as they don't appear to be in a specific series. I found them on his flickr pages as I couldn't access his Cargo page/website but it is interesting the way the are uploaded onto here as they are all jumbled meaning he hasn't necessarily thought about the context of it being shown on here to the extent you would in a book or gallery space.

JULIE POCHRON: UMAMI

Apple

Asparagus

Crab Leg

Green Bean

Umami definition: a category of taste in food (besides sweet, sour, salt, and bitter), corresponding to the flavour of glutamates, especially monosodium glutamate.

I am looking at photographers who take a different look into the self-portrait or portrait in general as my images for this project are essentially a portrait of the person, without it literally being a portrait of the person and I think that Julie Pochron's Umami is a great example of another example of this. She doesn't just take a self portrait solely of her face, she takes the portrait of a part of her body and takes from it and relates it to an item of food by overlaying it within the image. Pochron does all of this within the image by shooting in-camera multiple exposures and she then prints large scale analogue type c prints. She is interested in combining two types of photography together: food and fashion and therefore creating a totally different experience within a self portrait.

Her personal statement about the work:

My muse—she is the rebellious play of my subconscious. She embodies the divine and the grotesque. She fuses the obvious with the esoteric. My muse sends rhythms, and from them I create visions that redeem the use of the feminine form.

Images of 'woman' bombard us—sexy women, pouty women, rich women, fulfilled women. My innermost desire runs parallel to these, persuading me to buy what they sell, to become what they are.
But my muse recognizes the mirage and saves me.

She digests these apparitions and reforms them, leaving icons of solid strength and beauty in their place.

They are shown in a series and would be shown within a series at exhibition/book and so they would work together like this. I think they work effectively on their own or in a group and so I don't think this project would be too hard to put in either.
